Primary

The Primary classes from grade I – V are responsible for a strong academic foundation for the future years and are given utmost importance.

The NCERT syllabus is introduced from class I onward. An interactive and theme based approach is followed where in activities related to various subjects and areas are integrated to revolve around one theme or concept.

Thus, if the theme of the month is related to ‘Nature’ , children address environmental issues like ‘conservation of resources’ through presentations, campaigns and discussions, appreciate nature through gardening activities and experiments, make beautiful posters on natural life, conduct science experiments on air and water, write a paragraph on their visit to the zoo, compare the sizes of various creatures on earth and so on.

Language Learning (English and Hindi)

The Language Curriculum comprises of four strands:

The first two strands are aimed primarily at language learning while the other two contribute to the more general aspects of the child development where she/he learns through the languages.

Language learning is an integrated process where all the functions of oral language, reading and writing are closely linked to develop effective communication skills among the young learners.

It is a universally known fact that,
“Language cannot be taught but is caught.”

Oral language activities play a key role to this effect and form the basis of all communications. Children are provided with ample opportunities to explore, experiment with and enjoy all the playful aspects of language. Reading skills are mastered through exposure to age – specific reading material and pronounciation drills. Children are encouraged to develop a rich bank of vocabulary and use it in their day to day communication, be it speaking or writing. Creative Writing activities provide opportunities to develop and improve sentence structures and enhance expressiveness in writing. Monthly mike exposure does wonders for the child’s confidence and competence in using language.

Mathematics

At Laurel High, the Mathematics Programme follows a practical and flexible approach to accommodate children of different levels of ability. Basic concepts of Number, Algebra, Shape and space, Measures etc are made meaningful through stimulating activities and experiences for an easy grasp of this difficult subject. Students are made to acquire expertise in mental calculations through SMART board drills, lab activities and other creative exercises.

Integration of the Mathematics Curriculum with other subjects equips the young Laurelites with the knowledge and skills required for everyday living such as –

  • applying and problem solving
  • communicating and expressing
  • integrating and connecting
  • reasoning and implementing
  • understanding and recalling
  • handling and manipulating in a constructive manner
  • Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE)

The development and implementation of SPHE is influenced significantly by the ethos and characteristic spirit of the school and is presented in three strands.

Myself which is concerned with the personal development of the child and her/his health and well being.
Myself and others focuses on developing a sense of care and respect for other people and the facility for effective relation and communication with them.
Myself and the wider world enables children to explore the various communities in which they live.

In order to achieve the above objectives, a wide variety of active learning strategies are implemented in a supportive and caring environment which allow the child to participate in a real and meaningful way:

Through the above, young Laurelites develop a variety of personal and self-management skills. Group activities enhance the social skills of co-operation and conflict resolution. Children are encouraged to respect the human and cultural diversity and understand the need to care for their environment.
